In late-breaking news from Gloria TV:
“EXCLUSIVE: An American sedevacantist website has spread the rumor that an agreement between the SSPX and the Vatican is imminent. But Father Franz Schmidberger, the rector of the Society’s seminary in Germany, declared before Gloria.tv that an agreement was not in sight. But he confirmed that there exists a Vatican proposal in which – quote – “a lot still needs to be clarified.”
In October we posted on just this situation, in Pope Francis’ Endgame. Here is the relevant portion:
In an earlier post (of Michael Matt’s), A Bishop at the Top of the World, Mr. Matt reported on a visit he had recently with Bishop Fellay, Superior General of the SSPX. Matt described Bishop Fellay as,
“a man at a crossroads who is wrestling not with his conscience, but with the stark reality of his situation and the plight of Holy Mother Church. What does God want him to do?” …
“Is now the right time for some sort of official reunification of the SSPX with the Vatican? God help us, I can’t understand how it could be. Francis and modernist friends seem to risk destroying the entire human element of Christ’s Church with their infernal policies. …
“Is the situation in the Church any better today than it was in 1988? If it is, then Lefebvre himself would counsel Fellay to go to Rome. But if it is not, then how can Bishop Fellay go to Rome without indicting the Archbishop? This is the dilemma that must keep Bishop Fellay awake at night,”
Comment: When I read the above article, I could not help thinking, “Why on earth is Bishop Fellay in any turmoil? What could be pushing him to consider reuniting (or regularizing or whatever it is the Vatican calls it now) with this FrancisChurch which is apparently determined to pull the pillars of faith down so it can build a Universal Church of Man with the rubble. Why now?
As I turned the problem over, and discussed the matter with my own little “Kitchen Cabinet” of advisors, only one possibility emerged. Now, I’d like to know what you think.
Remember when Pope Francis announced his “Year of Mercy” in September, he said that he intended it to be for every believer, “a true moment of encounter with the mercy of God,” Pope Francis then announced he was allowing the “faithful who for various reasons choose to attend [SSPX] churches” to receive the sacrament of penance from SSPX priests.
“This Jubilee Year of Mercy excludes no one,” he said. “From various quarters, several brother bishops have told me of their (the SSPX) good faith and sacramental practice, combined, however, with an uneasy situation from the pastoral standpoint. I trust that in the near future solutions may be found to recover full communion with the priests and superiors of the fraternity.”
It’s just a little nagging thought, but what if the “God of Surprises” decides to extend to the SSPX full recognition to administer all the sacraments? Would it not be completely in character for this Most Merciful Pope® to simply wave his magic wand and make all that bothersome “irregular canonical status” disappear? Think of the possibilities for offending Cardinal Muller, the entire Curia, Ecclesia Dei, why, the possibilities are endless. And he gets to proclaim in his endearingly humble way that he is able to do this because as he reminds us, he is “– by the will of Christ Himself – the ‘supreme Pastor and Teacher of all the faithful’ “. And that he enjoys, “supreme, full, immediate, and universal ordinary power in the Church”.
Also, consider that by reaching out and enfolding the Society in a great big merciful bear hug, (you know, the suffocating kind), our beloved Pontiff will be effectively preventing an escape route for priests and laity who do not accept the new merciful theology of Francis. Thus, leaving those who choose to be faithful to Christ no alternative; Bergoglio’s new church or flee to the desert as foretold in the Apocalypse.
And if the Society refuses to take the bait, what then will be their status? What does a “loyal son of the Church” do when the Vicar of Christ on earth summons them to obedience?
What happened to the Franciscans of the Immaculate, who had taken an extra vow to be loyal to the Pope?
If they dare to refuse the command of this “supreme Pastor”, what then?
Seems like a win-win for the humble guy …
Just a thought …
