Video of John Vennari’s funeral, sent by a kind reader for those who may not have seen it yet .
There is a subtle message in Father Purdy’s homily regarding John’s insistence on remaining as lucid as possible in order to complete the work of his salvation. This modern false mercy which insists on palliating the patient presents an often insurmountable obstacle to the important work necessary to prepare one’s soul for the moment of death.
John Vennari was an immensely strong and determined man who fought to remain lucid and work out his salvation. In that, he teaches us all an essential message in our daily lives, and not just for our time of dying. Every action we take to mitigate our own pain reduces the merit of grace we earn for ourselves and for all sinners.
From the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Office for the Dead:
Ant: Let every spirit praise the Lord.
V: I heard a voice from Heaven saying to me:
R: Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.
Ant: I am the Resurrection and the Life. He that believeth in Me, though he be dead shall live, and every one that liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.
May John’s soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
