In a previous post, The Promise, we spoke of Our Lady of the Rosary’s invitation and promise.
Our Lady of Fatima invited Francisco, Jacinta and Lúcia, “Are you willing to offer yourselves to God and bear all the sufferings He wills to send you, as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and of supplication for the conversion of sinners?”
Lúcia did not hesitate to accept on behalf of Francisco and Jacinta. Let us follow her lead, and then we too shall share in the promise, for this is our task at this time. And so, having accepted, we come to The Promise:
“Then you are going to suffer a great deal, but the grace of God will be your comfort.” “I will never forsake you. My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God.”
Many who read this wonder, What does this mean, and why must this be? In 1917, when Our Lady spoke thus, the isolated little backwater of Fatima, Portugal remained thoroughly Catholic, but already the government was atheistic, Masonic and rigidly anti-Catholic. The faith in Portugal had in fact been under siege for some decades. The world was in the midst of a horrendous war which had been brought about to destroy Christendom. The eventual goal was to eliminate all traces of Christ and His Church in this upcoming new world order. Note that this has largely been accomplished after the bloodiest century in the history of mankind and the grace of God has become scarce indeed.
In another land very, very long ago, shepherds much as these three children also watched their flocks. That land too, was rocky and rugged, with little hamlets nestled into the valleys and hillsides. There too, good people struggled to serve God in the midst of a deceitful, violent rule imposed on them from an alien god. But into that darkness, a Virgin was born, filled with light and grace, who would accept another invitation, and another promise. Through her joyful “Yes!” salvation came to us and it is she who offered us that day in the Cova da Iria the Promise we now accept.
The Immaculate Mother of God offers us a share in the Passion of the Church that she and her Divine Son are now enduring. The battle now raging is like none other in the history of mankind and involves the entire Church and every nation. Our Lord Jesus Christ has told us how we must wage it- and unlike the ancient enemy and those who follow him, we have all the powers of Heaven and its Queen herself to assist us. Christ our Redeemer is most effective when the enemy is most over-confident. Note the signs. Take heart, and pray the Rosary!
