The Crucified Child Jesus of Pichincha

By request. Please note there is an update at the end.

In the “Mystical City of God”, Blessed Maria de Jesus de Agreda recounts of the Child Jesus,

During prayer our Blessed Master sometimes assumed a kneeling posture, sometimes He was prostrate in the form of a cross, or at other times raised in the air in this same position which He loved so much. In the presence of His Mother He was wont to pray:

“O most blessed Cross! When shall thy arms receive mine, when shall I rest on thee and when shall my arms, nailed to thine, be spread to welcome all sinners? (Matt. 9, 13). But as I came from heaven for no other purpose than to invite them to imitate Me and associate with Me, they are even now and forever open to embrace and enrich all men. Come then, all ye that are blind, to the light. Come ye poor, to the treasures of my grace. Come, ye little ones, … Come, ye afflicted and worn out ones, … Come, ye just, … Come all ye children of Adam, for I call upon you all. I am the way, the truth and the life (13, 6), and I will deny nothing that you desire to receive. My eternal Father, they are the works of Thy hands, do not despise them; for I will offer Myself as a sacrifice on the Cross, in order to restore them to justice and freedom. If they be but willing I will lead them back to the bosom of Thy elect and to their heavenly kingdom, where Thy name shall be glorified.

At all these prayers the beloved Mother was present, and in her purest soul, as in the purest crystal, the light of the Onlybegotten was reflected. His interior and exterior prayers reechoed in Her, causing Her to imitate His petitions and prayers in the same postures. When the great Lady for the first time saw Him sweat blood, her maternal heart was transfixed with sorrow and filled with astonishment at the effects caused in Christ, our Lord, by the sins and ingratitudes committed by men, foreseen by the Lord and known to Her. In the anguish of her heart she turned to her fellow mortals and exclaimed: “O children of men! Little do ye understand how highly the Lord esteems His image and likeness in you! For, as the price of your salvation, He offers His own blood and deems it little to shed all of it for you. O could I but unite your wills with mine, in order that I might bring you to love and obey Him!” (The Mystical City of God: Complete Edition Containing all Four Volumes with Illustrations. Blessed Maria de Jesus de Agreda was a Spanish nun who lived from 1602 to 1665. Coincidentally, another Spanish nun who also received mystical revelations of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Our Lord Jesus Christ was Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres who lived from 1563-1635. Mother Mariana also was privileged with a powerful revelation of the Crucified Child Jesus. For the account of this revelation, we owe a debt of gratitude to the scholarly work of Dr. Marian Horvat. Pichincha Mountain is the mighty sentinel which overlooks Quito, Ecuador, and was the setting for a wondrous vision of the Child Jesus, crucified for love of poor sinners. Although the vision occurred in 1628, it bears especial relevance for these times.

“I can do no more to show My love for you."
“I can do no more to show My love for you.”

The Vision of the Crucified Child Jesus on Pichincha Mountain

Towards the end of 1628, one midnight, Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres was praying in the Conceptionist Convent in Quito Ecuador when she received a vision of Our Lady of Good Success carrying in her arms the Divine Child Jesus. Our Lady commanded her to look to the Pichincha Mountain, “where you will see this Divine Infant … crucified.”

Mother Mariana then saw the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael carry the Divine Child to Pichincha Mountain, which overlooks the city of Quito. Here the Child Jesus took the form of a boy of about 12 to 15 years of age, His expression sweetly majestic. He prostrated Himself on the ground with His arms extended as on a cross and prayed to His Eternal Father to look with favor on Ecuador.

A celestial light enveloped the whole mountain, and the Christ Child rose and stood before a cross with the inscription INRI at its head. On its left arm hung a crown of sharp thorns; on its right, a white stole.

The three Archangels reappeared, with St. Gabriel carrying a white Host. St. Michael bore a long white tunic speckled with stars and St. Raphael carried a mantle of a magnificent rose color unknown on this earth. The Child Jesus vested Himself in the white tunic and stole, and over them draped the magnificent mantle. Then He approached the cross, took the crown of thorns and placed it on His Head. He extended His arms and remained crucified, but without any nails appearing either on His hands or feet. Down His cheeks streamed large tears, which were gathered up by the Archangels St. Michael and St. Raphael and dispersed throughout the new nation.

He then ordered St. Gabriel to place the Host behind His head, where it became a kind of halo. Three resplendent beams of light streamed from it. On the center ray appeared the word LOVE, on the ray to His right, ECUADOR, and on the ray to His left, SPAIN. His expression reflected an intense pain, but also a serene joy to suffer for those whom He loved so dearly. As drops of blood fell from the wounds on His hands, feet and forehead, He fixed His gaze on the country and said these words:

I can do no more to show My love for you. Ungrateful souls, who repay the great love and attentions of My Heart with contempt, sacrileges and blasphemies. At least you, My beloved and hidden spouses, be My consolation in My Eucharistic solitude. Keep watch in My Company. Do not be overcome by the sleep of indifference to God, Who loves you so much. Always be the heroines of your country during the bitter and dire times that will come. Your humble, secret, and silent prayer and voluntary penances will save it from the destruction toward which its ungrateful sons will lead it. For these wretched ones, rebuffing and despising the good, will exalt and serve the evil and self-serving satellites of Satan.”

Thus was the Child Jesus crucified on the grand Pichincha Mountain. (Dr. Marian Horvat, “The Child Jesus of the Cross on Pichincha Mountain”, Tradition in Action.)

In her article, Dr. Horvat explains that the vision of the young Child Jesus, aged 12-15 presents us with a poignant picture of the young Jesus who embraces the Cross in His love for mankind, which is a powerful antidote for the deluge of temptations that beset our young people today, who are hammered with invitations to worldly pleasures and self-indulgence on all sides.

The revelations of Blessed Maria de Agreda and of Mother Mariana both hold out immense hope for us in these dark times. We turn to this devotion to teach our children a love for this reparation as part of the required Total Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Without this devotion, that is, without Jesus and Mary, there is no hope of salvation. For the past four centuries, Our Lady has been alternately warning and promising her children in order to aid us in this time of trial so that we might save our souls and the souls of those entrusted to us.

Since the early 17th century, Our Lady has provided us with a series of apparitions to warn us, strengthen us and provide us with hope for just these times of trial we are now facing.  It is fitting that the first of these prophetic warnings should be that of Our Lady of Good Success, for we need to focus on this hope, the hope of her ultimate success in defeating satan, especially now, when it seems that in this papacy, we have at last reached a nearly complete triumph of satan over the pure and holy Bride of Christ. Now we know that this cannot be, any more than that Our Lord Jesus Christ was defeated by satan on Golgotha. No! It appeared that way only in order for Our Savior to free us from sin.

Far from being defeated, Our Lord Jesus Christ arose from the dead by His own Divinity, defeating sin and death. By His same Divinity, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, He will free the Church from Satan and restore His Bride once more. This will prove to all the world that the Church is indeed the Bride of Our Lord Jesus Christ, founded by Him on His Sacred Body and Blood.

At Fatima, Our Lord revealed that the means He chooses to accomplish this is devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, His Mother. Let us live our Consecrations in the joyful hope of her good success!

NOTE as of 22 June 2018: We recall this beautiful devotion to the Crucified Child Jesus, today especially as we begin to focus on the important Third Visit of Our Lady of Fatima, July 13. By bringing this devotion back before our readers, I hope to help you reinvigorate your devotion to spiritual childhood as an essential aspect of our Total Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vile usurpers occupying the Holy See at present are preparing even greater assaults on the Faith. We must use every means at our disposal to strengthen our resolution to never allow one single insult, one single trial or one single cross be wasted. Eagerly accept every opportunity for penance!

We are so blessed to be here now! Please do not waste a moment in discouragement, but treasure all, in the certainty that all comes from the sweet and pierced hands of Our Dear Lord Himself.

Remember, pray the Rosary and confound the devil!

. Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of our hearts, Mother of the Church, do thou offer to the Eternal Father the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, for the conversion of poor sinners, especially our Pontiff.
