The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple, 2020

Today is the double feast of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also called Candlemas.  We offer these thoughts on this feast day from Father Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange.

Presentation of Child Jesus
Mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, … A light to enlighten the gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel.

Mary said her Fiat in peace and holy joy on the day of the Annunciation. There was sorrow too in her heart at the thought of the sufferings which Isaias had foretold would befall her Son. Still more light is thrown for her on the mystery of the Redemption when the holy old man Simeon speaks of the Child Jesus as the “Salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles.” Mary remains silent in wonder and thanksgiving.

Simeon continues:

“This child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted.” Jesus, come for the salvation of all, will be the occasion of the fall of many, He will be a stumbling block (Is. 8:14) for many of the Jews, who, refusing to recognise Him as the Messiah, will fall into infidelity and thence to eternal ruin. (Rom. 9:32; 1 Cor. 1:3). Jesus Himself will say later: “Blessed is he that shall not be scandalised in me.” (Matt. 11:6).

Turning then to Mary herself, Simeon addressed to her the prophetic words: “And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed.” Mary will have a share in the Saviour’s trials. His sufferings will be hers. Her very heart will be pierced by a sword of sorrow. Had the Son of Man not come thus on earth we should never have known the full malice of pride’s revolt against truth. The hidden thoughts of hypocrisy and false zeal were revealed when the Pharisees cried out for the crucifixion of Him Who is Holiness.

Jesus’ fullness of grace had two apparently contradictory effects: the most perfect peace of soul; the will to offer Himself as a redemptive victim. Mary’s grace produced two similarly contrasting effects: the pure joys of the days of the Annunciation and the Nativity; the desire to be united most generously to the sufferings of her Son for our salvation.

Thus, presenting Him in the temple, she already offers Him for us. Joy and sorrow are wedded in the heart of the Mother of God who is already the Mother of all who will believe in her Son.

†  Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of our hearts, Mother of the Church, do thou offer to the Eternal Father the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, for the conversion of poor sinners, especially our Pontiff.

~ by evensong for love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, King.

Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O Sacred Virgin! Give me strength against thine enemies!

So rich is our Church in her teachings and how sorrowful our Mother is for abandoning them. Yesterday I was privileged, (though it used to be a “right” for all Catholics) to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (not NO) with my Baptist husband, who, I believe, was given some insight into the beauty and mystery of our faith. I mean, the incense, chant and prayers and readings, homily, how could he think this was anything except awesome presence of God??? He did and I am grateful and keep praying…I am cradle Catholic but didn’t realize the great love of our Lord until like, yesterday. Deo gratias.

Nancy, that is wonderful! Yes, our true Church, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic is such a rich treasure and we see this so beautifully in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! Nancy, keep praying the Rosary and when possible, praying the Rosary before the Blessed Sacrament, and your life will be enriched beyond what you are able to envision.
How generously Our Lady leads us with blessings and yes, with miracles! and what you experience with the Mass and your husband’s response to it is but the beginning of blessings.

It’s so important for people to understand what you are just seeing! The Rosary of Our Lady, the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice – these are the answer! And floods of grace and healing and peace are the result. All this grace, all the gifts of God – they are there for the asking, but so many are unaware and for them we pray! Tradition is the Holy Sacrifice and devotion to the Mother of God. These two are as inseparable as the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts. The liturgy without the Immaculate Heart of Mary is not able to bear the fruit it should, it becomes sterile and pedantic, but with Our Lady of the Rosary, it brings astonishing floods of grace and yields much fruit. You see, in her Immaculate Heart is the grace and love that nourishes us – this is God’s will that through her we are given the necessary grace for us to flourish.

With devotion to the Immaculata and to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass you will see your life become what it is meant to be! Our path today is never easy, it cannot be otherwise in this time of the Passion, and our Dear Lord knows that, which is why He gave away His dearest and last “possession”, His own “Mama” with His dying words, to you. I am unable to express the depth and breadth of her love for you -for us all. But you know it best in the quiet hours with her through her rosary. I prayed the rosary for over 60 years for one soul, so dear to me. In her last few days, she returned and died in the faith, thank God and all is well. Sometimes, it is very close, but truly Our Lady is strong beyond all measure and she never loses a soul for whom we pray. Never doubt, never worry, for that is to insult both Our Lord and His Mother. See how they love you! And give them thanks always, for with them all is a blessing.
      All. Always.
I will keep you both in my prayers, Nancy,
      in her Immaculate Heart,

Thank you Evensong – this encourages me to pray to the end!!! and I will.
Our dear priest reminded us that with the Purification and the Presentation, are like Jesus and His Mother (and he intertwined his fingers together) they go hand and hand. My husband heard something for the first time!
