Archbishop Lefebvre and the Filial Correction

The recent Filial Correction is a welcome step  towards calling the attention of all the faithful to the tragic destruction being attempted by Pope Francis in his  reformation of the Church. What Luther achieved outside the Church, Francis attempts to achieve within: a church which is hollowed out, emptied of Our Lord Jesus Christ, His Virgin Mother, His sacraments, His teachings; a church of man to eclipse the true Church of Christ the King.

Even more encouraging than the Filial Correction itself is the reaction to it.  The partisans of error who have attempted to defend Pope Francis have demonstrated for all the world to see that there is in fact, absolutely no Catholic defense of this Pope’s destructive actions. Logic, reality, and the Faith itself must be discarded if one is to accept Pope Francis’s “irreversible changes”.

Another encouraging aspect of this is the excellent reporting being done by several Catholic blogs, many of whom were less than supportive of the Society of St. Pius X until rather recently. To see them defend Bishop Fellay and the Society has been most gratifying. Perhaps in time they will grasp the fact that it is the Society,  the work of Archbishop Lefebvre, which laid the groundwork for the defenders of the Faith today.

It is important that we understand that the driving force behind the Filial Correction is the grace of God, beseeched by thousands of faithful Catholics who offered their prayers and sacrifices daily, participating the the Society’s Crusade of Rosaries and Reparation.

Note well: It is grace.  Our Lady has promised us that nothing we ask through her Rosary will be denied.  For over a year, throughout the world, the faithful remnant of Catholics knelt and prayed the Rosary. They reinforced their Rosaries with sacrifices and penances, obeying St. Michael, the  Angel of Fatima to

 “Make of everything you can a sacrifice, and offer it to God as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners.”

The generosity of Our Lady of the Rosary is unfailing! When the Rosary and Reparation Crusade began, many were losing heart as it seemed that this Pope of destruction would soon  triumph over the weak and scattered forces trying to defend the Faith. However, we have seen that Our Lady of the Rosary does answer prayers.  Do not fail to note the role of the faithful recitation of the rosary, the continuous daily offering of our simple, mundane duties of state in all this.  Our Lady hears her children, We know this is true, as has been shown from Lepanto to Vienna and down even to these times today.

When Archbishop Lefebvre stood against the partisans of error who had gained control of the Vatican, he did not do so as a rebel, although he was often smeared with that label. He did so as a devoted servant of Christ the King. His honest explanations of his reasons, his criticism offered with the utmost respect for the role of the papacy, is actually the groundwork for the defense of the faith being undertaken today by those who signed the Filial Correction. We offer several quotes from the saintly Archbishop.

In June, 1987, after acknowledging that he had been waiting for a sign that he should take the initiative in providing for the continuation of his work of preserving the Faith, the Sacrifice of the Mass, and the Sacred Priesthood,  Archbishop Lefebvre explained that the Vatican’s reply to his objections on religious liberty is the sign which convinced him of the need to take action.

“We adhere, with all our heart, with all our soul to Catholic Rome, guardian of the Catholic Faith and of the traditions necessary for the preservation of that faith, to Eternal Rome, teacher of wisdom and truth.
On the other hand we refuse and have always refused to follow the Rome of the neo-Modernist and neo-Protestant tendency that clearly manifested itself in the Second Vatican Council and after the Council in all the reforms that resulted from it.”

“It is one thing to commit a grave and scandalous action; it is quite another to state false and erroneous principles which work out in practice in utterly disastrous conclusions!”

“… It is providential that by a particular set of circumstances we wrote the book that appeared just a few days ago, entitled: “They Uncrowned Him.”  Who? Who did the uncrowning and who was uncrowned? Who was uncrowned? Our Lord Jesus Christ. Who uncrowned him? The authorities in Rome today. . . . From end to end of the Liturgical year we chant:

“King of Kings, Lord of Lords,” Our Lord Jesus Christ. But now instead of extolling the kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ, here they are instituting a pantheon of all religions. . . . (It) is being constructed by the church authorities of Rome! What an immense scandal for souls, for Catholics who already question the universal kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ!

Rome is in darkness, in the darkness of error. There is no denying it. Impossible to deny it. How can we as Catholics, and all the more as priests, bear to look on the spectacle placed before our eyes in Assisi, in St. Peter’s Church given over for the practice of their pagan worship to the Buddhists who put their idol on the tabernacle of Jesus Christ, King of Kings, and performed their pagan ceremony in front of this tabernacle, empty no doubt, but capped with a Buddha, their idol. Is it conceivable? In a Catholic Church, a church of Our Lord Jesus Christ? These are facts which speak by themselves. We cannot conceive of an error more grave.

How is it possible? Let us leave the good Lord to answer. He guides all things, He is the master of events, Our Lord Jesus Christ, He knows what will come of this triumph of error over Rome and over the highest authorities, from the Pope to the cardinals and bishops of the entire world following these ideas; for indeed the bishops of the whole world are following the false ideas of the Council with their ecumenism and liberalism. God alone knows where it is all going to end.

For our part, however, if we wish to remain Catholic and to continue the Church, we have the grave and imprescriptible duty binding us firstly to increase the number of priests, priests believing in Our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Kingship, in His kingship over society, according to the Church’s doctrine. That is why I am happy that the book on liberalism has appeared today, my dear friends, so that you may nourish your minds on it and grasp in depth what our combat is all about. It is not a human combat! We are at grips with Satan! It is a combat requiring all the supernatural strength we need to fight against the adversary who means to destroy and uproot the Church, who means to destroy everything Our Lord Jesus Christ did. He meant to destroy Our Lord from the moment He was born, and now he means to continue destroying His Mystical Body, to destroy the reign of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to destroy all His institutions whatsoever. . .

So we must be aware of this dramatic and apocalyptic combat through which we are living, . . .

Are we going to quit the Church presently undergoing her Passion, and not come to her aid? And what will become of souls if nobody dares any longer proclaim the divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ? And what will become of souls if we no longer provide them with the true grace they need? All this is cryingly obvious, and so let us be convinced of it.

And that is the reason why it is likely that I shall give myself some successors to be able to continue the work of our Society. Because Rome is in darkness, because Rome at present can no longer hear the voice of truth – Rome no longer hears the voice of truth. Then what are we to do? What answer has there been to our appeals? For 20 years now I have been going to Rome. I have been writing, I have been speaking, I have been sending documents to say to them: – “Follow Tradition, come back to Tradition, otherwise the Church will be ruined. You, the appointed successors of those who built the Church, you must continue to build and not to demolish!” They are deaf, stone deaf to our appeals.

Of the liberals infesting the Vatican then (and now!): They are shutting themselves up in their errors, they are shutting themselves up in darkness, and they are quite simply going to lead souls into apostasy, the ruination of the divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the ruination of the Catholic and Christian Faith.

We are living in a quite unique age, we must realize that. The situation is not normal, least of all in Rome.. . .  the situation in Rome, a perfectly incredible situation, unparalleled in all history! Never has there been anything like it!

Never! – The Pope making himself, . , into a sort of guardian of the Pantheon of all religions, making himself the Pontiff of Liberalism! Tell me, tell me, pray – has such a situation ever existed in the Church? What are we to do, faced with such a reality? Weep, no doubt. Oh. weep, we do! Our heart is grieved, our heart is crushed by this situation! We would give our life, we would shed our blood to turn it around – but there it is.

When Archbishop Lefebvre determined that it would be necessary to consecrate bishops in order to preserve his work – the work of saving the faith,  he knew that he would be condemned and even today his opponents do not cease condemning him even though every action of Pope Francis and his partisans . proves the authenticity of the Archbishops position.  He responded to the attacks:

. . . Faced with this darkness in Rome, faced with the Roman authorities’ pertinacity in error, faced with this refusal to return to Truth or Tradition on the part of those who occupy the seats of authority in Rome, faced with all these things, it seems to us that the good Lord is asking for the Church to continue. This is why it is likely that before I give account of my life to the good Lord, I shall have to consecrate some bishops.

My dear friends, my dear brethren, let us pray. Let us pray with all our hearts, let us pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary! We shall go to Fatima on August 22nd to ask Our Lady of Fatima to help us. They would not reveal her Third Secret, they buried the message of the Virgin Mary. No doubt this message was meant to prevent what is happening today. Had her message been made known, most likely we would not be where we are today, the situation in Rome, would not be what it is today.

The Pope refused to make public the Virgin Mary’s message: well, the punishments foretold by Mary are coming: the apostasy announced in Scripture is on its way; the coming of the Anti-Christ draws near, as is perfectly obvious. So, faced with this quite exceptional situation, we too must take exceptional means.

There you have it, my dear brethren, my dear friends, during this Mass we shall pray, especially to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, guardians of the Church: may they enlighten us! May they help us! May they obtain for us the Gift of Strength and the Gift of Wisdom to continue their work, to carry on the work of Peter and Paul and all their successors. Let us ask for this from the Blessed Virgin Mary above all, and let us consecrate our persons, our families, our cities to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

From the above quotes, it is undeniable that Our Lady of the Rosary was the guiding light for Archbishop Lefebvre and his work; true devotion to her Immaculate Heart was inherent in all his actions.  Insofar as the current defenders of the faith base their defense on the Message of Fatima, and consecrate their efforts to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart, they will not fail. Let us take up our Rosaries and support them, placing all our trust in the most Blessed Mother of God. She will not fail us. We are her children after all.

Pray the Rosary with confidence and joy!

  Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of our hearts, Mother of the Church, do thou offer to the Eternal Father the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, for the conversion of poor sinners, especially our Pontiff.
  Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thy kingdom come! Viva Cristo Rey!
  Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.
  St. Joseph, protect us, protect our families, protect our priests.
  St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

Act of Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

On August 20, Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General recited this act of consecration along with Bishop Bernard Tissier de Mallerais and Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta, auxiliary bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X during a international pilgrimage gathering more than 10.000 faithful from all over the world.

Prostrate at the foot of your throne of grace, O Queen of the Holy Rosary, we intend to accomplish, insofar as we are able, the requests you expressed when you came one hundred years ago to appear to us on this earth.

The abominable sins of the world, the persecutions directed against the Church of Jesus Christ, and even more, the apostasy of nations and Christian souls, and the forgetfulness of so many of your motherhood of grace crush your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, so united in its compassion with the sufferings of the Sacred Heart of your divine Son.

In order to repair so many crimes, You have asked for the establishment of the devotion of reparation to your Immaculate Heart; and in order to stop the scourges of God you predicted, you became the messenger of the Most High to ask the Vicar of Jesus Christ, together with all the bishops of the world, to consecrate Russia to your Immaculate Heart. Alas, they have not yet heeded your message.

Therefore, in anticipation of the happy Day when the Sovereign Pontiff finally accedes to the demands of your divine Son, without attributing to ourselves an authority that is not ours, but with a humble supplication to your Immaculate Heart, as a Catholic bishop full of concern for the fate of the universal Church, and in union with all the bishops, priests, and faithful believers, we have resolved to respond to the best of our ability to Heaven’s requests.

Deign, therefore, O Mother of God, to accept the solemn act of reparation that We present to your Immaculate Heart for all the offenses with which, along with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it is afflicted by sinners and by ungodly men.

Secondly, as far as it is in our power, we give, deliver, and consecrate Russia to your Immaculate Heart: we beg you, in your motherly mercy, to take this nation under your powerful protection, make it your domain in which you may reign as Sovereign, make this land of persecution a land of choice and blessing.

We conjure you to submit this nation to yourself so completely that, converted from her legal godlessness, she may become a new kingdom for Our Lord Jesus Christ, a new legacy for His sweet scepter. And that converted from her ancient schism, she may return to the unity of the one fold of the Eternal Shepherd, and thus subject to the Vicar of your divine Son, she may become an ardent apostle of the Social Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ over all the nations of the earth.

We also beseech thee, O Mother of Mercy, by this most splendid miracle of your suppliant omnipotence, to manifest to the world the truth of your universal mediation of grace.

And lastly, deign, O Queen of Peace, to bring to the world the peace that the world cannot give, peace of weapons and peace of souls, the peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ and the Kingdom of Christ through the reign of your Immaculate Heart, O Mary. Amen.

No Gnosis Required

Each time the Society of St. Pius X issues a statement, it is accompanied by a buzzing cloud of internet commenters who offer their sly and misleading interpretations. The Society’s most recent Communique is no different. One blog when posting it actually carried the instruction to its readers that the statement is “to be read between the lines”.

On the contrary, “reading between the lines” has contributed much disinformation and confusion to this situation. In Matthew we read, “Let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.” (Matt. 5, 37). Let us stop this armchair pontificating and look at this most recent statement as it is.

A Crusade of Penance

If we are to survive the tsunami of evil washing over the Church, we must make the best use we can of the time left. Although Bishop Fellay has scheduled the new Rosary Crusade to begin on the Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption into Heaven, August 15th, let us focus now on the penitential aspect.

At Fatima, Our Lady requested penance, so let’s jump in now, ahead of the Rosary Crusade, to support the Crusade. One excellent penance is the First Saturdays of Reparation. If we begin the First Saturday of August, we will have five completed by the end of 2016, although it is a very good practice to continue them in a spirit of reparation for all those who do not make them.

But as St. Michael the Archangel recommended 100 years ago at Fatima, we must make of everything we can a sacrifice, offering all in an obedient and penitential spirit.

Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in array?
Grant that I may praise thee, O Sacred Virgin, give me strength against thy enemies!

The prayer above is from the hour of Prime in the traditional Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Those who say it often are familiar with the frequent references to battle and enemies that run through the Little Office. This is because the Little Office, as a liturgical prayer of the Church, reflects the intense battle being waged against the Bride of Christ by the powers of darkness and deceit. The prayers of the Little Office are a daily reminder of the “enmity between (satan’s) seed and her seed”.

For centuries, this simple Office has been the earnest prayer of those who are called to embrace Mary, the Immaculate Mother of our Savior as their own Mother. We are not called to merely enjoy the comforts of her love in pious prayer, but to serve our Queen actively in this intense and ongoing battle.

A Win-Win for the Humble Pope

In late-breaking news from Gloria TV:

“EXCLUSIVE: An American sedevacantist website has spread the rumor that an agreement between the SSPX and the Vatican is imminent. But Father Franz Schmidberger, the rector of the Society’s seminary in Germany, declared before Gloria.tv that an agreement was not in sight. But he confirmed that there exists a Vatican proposal in which – quote – “a lot still needs to be clarified.”

In October we posted on just this situation, in Pope Francis’ Endgame. Here is the relevant portion:

In an earlier post (of Michael Matt’s), A Bishop at the Top of the World, Mr. Matt reported on a visit he had recently with Bishop Fellay, Superior General of the SSPX. Matt described Bishop Fellay as,

“a man at a crossroads who is wrestling not with his conscience, but with the stark reality of his situation and the plight of Holy Mother Church. What does God want him to do?” …

“Is now the right time for some sort of official reunification of the SSPX with the Vatican? God help us, I can’t understand how it could be. Francis and modernist friends seem to risk destroying the entire human element of Christ’s Church with their infernal policies. …

“Is the situation in the Church any better today than it was in 1988? If it is, then Lefebvre himself would counsel Fellay to go to Rome. But if it is not, then how can Bishop Fellay go to Rome without indicting the Archbishop? This is the dilemma that must keep Bishop Fellay awake at night,”

A Document to be Exploited

Declaration Concerning the Synod on the Family

The Final Report of the second session of the Synod on the Family, published on October 24, 2015, far from showing a consensus of the Synod Fathers, is the expression of a compromise between profoundly divergent positions. Of course we can read in it some doctrinal reminders about marriage and the Catholic family, but we note also some regrettable ambiguities and omissions, and most importantly several breaches opened up in discipline in the name of a relativistic pastoral “mercy”. The general impression that this document gives is of confusion, which will not fail to be exploited in a sense contrary to the constant teaching of the Church.

This is why it seems to us necessary to reaffirm the truth received from Christ (1) about the role of the pope and the bishops and (2) about marriage and the family. We are doing this in the same spirit that prompted us to send to Pope Francis a petition before the second session of this Synod.

1. The Role of the Pope and the Bishops[1]
As sons of the Catholic Church, we believe that the Bishop of Rome, the Successor of St. Peter, is the Vicar of Christ, and at the same time that he is the head of the whole Church. His power is a jurisdiction in the proper sense. With regard to this power, the pastors, as well as the faithful of the particular Churches, separately or all together, even in a Council, in a Synod, or in episcopal conferences, are obliged by a duty of hierarchical subordination and genuine obedience.

God has arranged things in such a way that, by maintaining unity of communion with the Bishop of Rome and by professing the same faith, the Church of Christ might be one flock under one Shepherd. God’s Holy Church is divinely constituted as a hierarchical society, in which the authority that governs the faithful comes from God, through the pope and the bishops who are subject to him.[2]

When the supreme papal Magisterium has issued the authentic expression of revealed truth, in dogmatic matters as well as in disciplinary matters, it is not within the province of ecclesiastical organs vested with a lesser degree of authority—such as bishops’ conferences—to introduce modifications to it.

The meaning of the sacred dogmas that must be preserved perpetually is the one that the Magisterium of the pope and the bishops has taught once and for all, and it is never lawful to deviate from it. Hence the Church’s pastoral ministry, when it practices mercy, must begin by remedying the poverty of ignorance, by giving souls the expression of the truth that will save them.

In the hierarchy thus instituted by God, in matters of faith and magisterial teaching, revealed truths were entrusted as a Sacred Deposit to the apostles and to their successors, the pope and the bishops, so that they might guard it faithfully and teach it authoritatively. The sources that contain this Deposit are the books of Sacred Scripture and the non-written traditions which, after being received by the apostles from Christ Himself or handed on by the apostles under the dictation of the Holy Ghost, have come down to us.

When the teaching Church declares the meaning of these truths contained in Scripture and Tradition, she imposes it with authority on the faithful, so that they might believe it as being revealed by God. It is false to say that the job of the pope and the bishops is to ratify what the sensus fidei or the common experience of the ‘People of God’ suggests to them.

As we already wrote in our Petition to the Holy Father: “Our uneasiness is caused by something that Saint Pius X condemned in his Encyclical Pascendi: an alignment of dogma with supposed contemporary demands. Pius X and you, Holy Father, received the fullness of the authority to teach, sanctify and govern in obedience to Christ, who is the Head and the Shepherd of the flock in every age and in every place, whose faithful vicar the pope should be on this earth. The object of a dogmatic condemnation could not possibly become, with the passage of time, an authorized pastoral practice.”

This is what prompted Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre to write in his Declaration dated November 21, 1974: “No authority, not even the highest in the hierarchy, can force us to abandon or diminish our Catholic Faith, so clearly expressed and professed by the Church’s Magisterium for nineteen centuries. ‘But though we,’ says St. Paul, ‘or an angel from heaven preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema.’”[3]

2. Marriage and the Catholic Family
As for marriage, God provided for the increase of the human race by instituting marriage, which is the stable and perpetual union of a man and a woman.[4] The marriage of baptized persons is a sacrament, since Christ elevated it to that dignity; marriage and the family are therefore institutions that are both divine and natural.

The primary end of marriage is the procreation and education of children, which no human intention should prevent by performing acts contrary to it. The secondary end of marriage is the mutual assistance that the spouses offer to each other as well as the remedy to concupiscence.

Christ established that the unity of marriage would be definitive, both for Christians and for all mankind. This unity possesses an indissoluble character, such that the conjugal bond can never be broken, neither by the will of the two parties nor by any human authority: “What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.”[5] In the case of the sacramental marriage of baptized persons, this unity and indissolubility are further explained by the fact that it is the sign of Christ’s union with His Bride.

Anything that human beings may decree or do against the unity or indissolubility of marriage is not in keeping with the requirements of nature or with the good of human society. Moreover, faithful Catholics have the serious duty not to join together solely by the bond of a civil marriage, without taking into account the religious marriage prescribed by the Church.

The reception of the Eucharist (or sacramental Communion) requires the state of sanctifying grace and union with Christ through charity; it increases this charity and at the same time signifies Christ’s love for the Church, which is united with Him as His only Spouse. Consequently, those who deliberately cohabit or even live together in an adulterous union, contrary to the laws God and of the Church, cannot be admitted to Eucharistic Communion because they are giving the bad example of a serious lack of justice and charity, and they are considered public sinners: “He that shall marry her that is put away committeth adultery.”[6]

In order to receive absolution for one’s sins within the framework of the Sacrament of Penance, it is necessary to have the firm resolution to sin no more, and consequently those who refuse to put an end to their irregular situation cannot receive valid absolution.[7]

In keeping with the natural law, man has a right to exercise his sexuality only within lawful marriage, while respecting the limits set by morality. This is why homosexuality contradicts natural and divine law. Unions entered into apart from marriage (cohabitation, adulterous, or even homosexual unions) are a disorder contrary to the requirements of the natural divine law and are therefore a sin; it is impossible to acknowledge therein any moral good whatsoever, even diminished.

Given current errors and civil legislation against the sanctity of marriage and the purity of morals, the natural law allows no exceptions, because God in His infinite wisdom, when He gave His law, foresaw all cases and all circumstances, unlike human legislators. Therefore so-called situation ethics, whereby some propose to adapt the rules of conduct dictated by the natural law to the variable circumstances of different cultures, is inadmissible. The solution to problems of a moral order must not be decided solely by the consciences of the spouses of or their pastors, and the natural law is imposed on conscience as a rule of action.

The Good Samaritan’s care for the sinner is manifested by a kind of mercy that does not compromise with his sin, just as the physician who wants to help a sick person recover his health effectively does not compromise with his sickness but helps him to get rid of it. One cannot emancipate oneself from Gospel teaching in the name of a subjectivist pastoral approach which, while recalling it in general, would abolish in on a case-by-case basis. One cannot grant to the bishops the faculty of suspending the law of the indissolubility of marriage ad casum, without running the risk of weakening the teaching of the Gospel and of fragmenting the authority of the Church. For, in this erroneous view, what is affirmed doctrinally could be denied pastorally, and what is forbidden de jure could be authorized de facto.

In this utter confusion it is now up to the pope—in keeping with his responsibility, and within the limits set on him by Christ—to restate clearly and firmly the Catholic truth quod semper, quod ubique, quod ab omnibus,[8] and to keep this universal truth from being contradicted in practice locally.

Following Christ’s counsel: vigilate et orate, we pray for the pope: oremus pro pontifice nostro Francisco, and we remain vigilant: non tradat eum in manus inimicorum ejus, so that God may not deliver him over to the power of his enemies. We implore Mary, Mother of the Church, to obtain for him the graces that will enable him to be the faithful steward of the treasures of her Divine Son.

The truth spoken clearly, unambiguously. Note that Bishop Fellay states that we pray for the Pope “that God may not deliver him over to the power of his enemies.” Pope Francis needs to grasp that Cardinal Danneels and his ilk are actually his enemies as they are enemies of all humanity. For those of us who have been awaiting some clear, definitive statement from the Society of St. Pius X regarding the the Bergoglio/Kasper agenda and the impending Synod, here is Bishop Fellay’s elegant and heartfelt response, at last, from SSPX. I don’t know why it took them so long to post this!

Most Holy Father,

It is with great anxiety that we observe all around us a persistent degradation of marriage and the family, the origin and foundation of all human society. This decay is rapidly accelerating, particularly because of the legalization of the most immoral and depraved sorts of behavior. Today the law of God, even the simply natural law, is being publicly trampled underfoot; the gravest sins are multiplying in a troubling way and cry out to Heaven for vengeance.

Most Holy Father,

We cannot conceal from you the fact that the first part of the Synod dedicated to “Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization” greatly alarmed us. From ecclesiastical dignitaries we heard and read statements so contrary to the clear and constant doctrine of the Church concerning the sanctity of marriage, that our souls were deeply disturbed. These men claimed to have your support, and their claims met with no public denial. What worries us even more is that certain of your words give the impression that it might be possible for doctrine to evolve in response to new needs of the Christian people. Our disquiet comes from the fact that in his encyclical Pascendi, Saint Pius X condemned an alteration of dogma that would make it conform to so-called requirements of the present time. Both Pius X and you, Most Holy Father, received the fullness of the authority to teach, sanctify, and govern in obedience to Christ, Who is the head and pastor of the flock at all times and in all places, and whose faithful vicar the Pope must be on this earth. That which has been subject to a solemn condemnation cannot, over time, become an approved pastoral practice.

God, the author of nature, established the stable union of a man and a woman for the purpose of perpetuating the human species. Old Testament revelation teaches us, in the most obvious way, that indissoluble marriage between one man and one woman was established directly by God, and that its essential characteristics were not left by Him to the free choice of men, such that marriage remains under a very special divine protection: “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.” (Exodus 20:17)

The gospels teach us that Jesus Himself, by virtue of his supreme authority, definitively reestablished marriage in its original purity, which the corruption of men had altered: “What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.” (Matthew 19:6)

Throughout time it has been the glory of the Catholic Church to defend the human and divine reality of marriage against turmoil, despite entreaties, disregarding threats and temptations. Even though corrupt men abandoned her for this reason alone, the Church has always held high the standard of fidelity, purity, and fruitfulness, in short, the standard of genuine conjugal and familial love.

As the second part of this Synod dedicated to the family approaches, in conscience we feel it our duty to express to the Apostolic See the profound anxieties which seize us at the thought of “conclusions” that could be proposed on that occasion, if by some great misfortune there were to be a new attack against the sanctity of marriage and the family, a new weakening of couples and home life. We hope with all our heart that the Synod will on the contrary perform a work of genuine mercy by recalling in its entirety, for the good of souls, the Church’s salutary teaching on the subject of marriage.

We are fully aware, especially in the present context, that people entangled in abnormal marital situations must be welcomed pastorally with compassion, so as to show them the very merciful face of the God of love proclaimed by the Church.

Nevertheless, the law of God, expression of his eternal love for mankind, is in itself the supreme mercy for all periods of history, all persons, and all situations. Therefore we pray that the gospel truth concerning marriage, which the Synod ought to proclaim, may not be skirted in practice by numerous “pastoral exceptions” that would distort its true meaning, or by legislation that would almost unfailingly abolish its real import. On this point we feel obliged to say that, despite reminders concerning the indissolubility of marriage, the canonical changes required by the Moto Proprio Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus facilitating declarations of nullity will de facto open the door to legal proceedings authorizing “Catholic divorce,” even if goes by another name. These modifications acknowledge contemporary morals without attempting to put them in accord with the divine law. Are we then not to be heart stricken by the fate of children born to these marriages annulled in haste and who cannot but be victims of the “culture of waste”.

In the sixteenth century Pope Clement VII refused to accord Henry VIII of England the divorce he was demanding. Despite much pressure and at the risk of an Anglican schism, the Pope upheld the sublime teaching of Christ and his Church concerning the indissolubility of marriage. Will his decision now be repudiated by a “canonical repentance”?

Throughout the world in recent times, many families have courageously rallied against civil laws that undermine the natural and Christian family and publicly encourage scandalous behavior contrary to the most basic morality. Can the Church abandon those who, sometimes to their own detriment, and always subject to mockery and taunts, wage this necessary but very difficult battle? Such a stance would constitute a disastrous counter-witness, and for these persons it would be a source of disgust and discouragement. Churchmen, on the contrary, by virtue of their very mission, should offer them clear support backed up by solid arguments.

Most Holy Father,

For the honor of Our Lord Jesus Christ, for the consolation of the Church and of all faithful Catholics, for the good of society and of all humanity, in this crucial hour we petition you therefore to let your voice resound throughout the world with a word of truth, clarity, and firmness, in defense of Christian and even merely human marriage, in support of its foundation, namely, the difference and complementarity of the sexes, upholding its exclusivity and indissolubility. With filial piety we beg you to let your voice be heard by all, and that it be accompanied by actions too in support of the Catholic family.

We entrust this humble petition to the patronage of Saint John the Baptist, who underwent martyrdom for having publicly defended the sanctity and exclusivity of marriage, even against a scandalous civil authority in a case of “divorced-and-remarried persons.” And we pray the Precursor give Your Holiness the courage to recall before the whole world the true doctrine concerning natural and Christian marriage.

In one word, the life of Tradition is a life of contemplation of the Eternal Truth and love of the Eternal Good–not a constant change! (Abp. Marcel Lefebvre)

Twenty-seven years ago today, on June 30, 1988 Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, founder of the Society of St. Pius X, and Bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer, bishop emeritus of Campos, Brazil, consecrated four bishops at the seminary of Econe, Switzerland, in the presence of 10,000 faithful and hundreds of priests and religious.

In the July, 1988 issue of The Angelus, Rev.  Father Francois Laisney, then District Superior of the Society in the United States wrote about the historical Episcopal Consecrations. The following are some excerpts. I believe the entire article is available online at The Angelus Archives.

Christ has given to His Church the complete Deposit of Faith. Each individual may deepen his knowledge of this Deposit, but the Church had it all since its beginning. The Church may defend it more and more explicitly against the negators and the heresies, but neither adds to it, nor loses any parcel of this Eternal Truth.

The Church possesses, from the beginning, the Perfect Example of Virtue: the Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ. All the saints have imitated Him; we have to follow in their footsteps. The way to heaven is not to be invented; there is one, and only one; it is Our Lord Jesus Christ: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me!”

Therefore there can be no change in the Church’s morals, which are all summed up in these words of Our Lord: “Be ye perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt. 5:48). The Divine Perfection is eternal and immutable. In heaven the saints “rest” in God, thus without changes, sharing Divine Eternity. On the contrary, in hell, the damned will be tormented by unrest: the unceasing succession and changes of torments, one worse than the other. Folly of those who love change for the sake of change! They might have an eternity of changes… in hell!

If there is some change in the Church as such, it is her wonderful capability of putting into practice her eternal principles to meet the needs of each era. This is particularly manifested in the many religious orders which have sprung up throughout the whole history of the Church. All of them follow the same Model: Jesus Christ, and the same principles of Faith and morals, but adapt them to their particular circumstances. In this regard, one can see Tradition living in the work of Archbishop Lefebvre and all the other traditional foundations. They have all come to the Eternal Principles to receive Eternal Life from them.

In one word, the life of Tradition is a life of contemplation of the Eternal Truth and love of the Eternal Good–not a constant change!

Injustices of the Condemnation
Those who condemn us, try to accuse us of not being faithful to the “living” Tradition. I hope the above reflections show that the true faithful to the Living Tradition are those who keep it and live it, without adulterating it with the spirit of the world. This is the very meaning of the word “faithful,” i.e., the one who keeps the Faith! Not the one who changes it! Liberal principles, which the Popes have repeatedly condemned, shall never be able to become a part of the Catholic Faith. In a time when so many have tried to marry the Church and the Revolution, it is urgent to keep Tradition, and to provide for its continuation. Therefore, according to the very principles of Canon Law, in cases of real emergency, there can be no sanction. Any sanction is unjust, since its motive is to destroy the Tradition of the Church, to refuse it the means to continue.

If any one still had doubts, the Good Lord in His divine providence, arranged some enlightening coincidences. On the very same day, June 30th, Rome was publishing a directory for “Celebrations Without Priests.” When Archbishop Lefebvre was providing for the continuation of the Catholic Priesthood, Rome was providing for the absence of priests! What will be these celebrations? They will be much like Protestant services.

Another coincidence, in the widely diffused USA Today, of July 1, the article announcing the Roman sanction against Archbishop Lefebvre was just above an article concerning Archbishop Hunthausen[5], entitled “Masses for Homosexuals”; the Archbishop of Seattle was resuming this abominable practice! If one had doubts about Archbishop Lefebvre’s rights, he had just to read a little further to get the answer: there is no justice in this current situation!

And Our Attitude Now?
“Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil by good.” These words of St. Paul are for each one of us. When evil seems to reign, we must not be discouraged and fall into bitterness. Our Lord, at the height of the hatred of the Jews and compromises of Pilate, did not curse, but rather prayed for His enemies: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” This must be our attitude: pray for the Church, pray for the Pope, pray for the bishops, that they may come back, as the Apostles who had abandoned Our Lord on Good Friday came back to the Faith on Easter Sunday. But do not follow them in their abandon; stay at the foot of the Cross with the few faithful to Christ, to the Sacrifice of Calvary, to the Sacrifice of the Mass.

This is a time for heroism–heroic faith and heroic charity. “Do not render evil for evil, nor cursing for cursing, but, on the contrary, blessing” (I Pet. 111:9). “Love your enemies, do good to your enemies, do good to those who hate you: and pray for those who persecute and calumniate you” (Mt. 5:44).

Indeed, Tradition is not only the handing down through the centuries of the Deposit of Faith, but also the example of the holiness of Our Lord, the examples of the saints. May the Blessed Virgin Mary help all of us to be faithful to the whole of Tradition: to the Truth and holiness of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The four new bishops, Bernard Tissier de Mallerais (born 1945, France), Richard Williamson (born 1940, England), Alfonso de Galarreta (born 1957, Spain), and Bernard Fellay (born 1958, Switzerland), were chosen by Archbishop Lefebvre among the members of the Society of St. Pius X because “they seemed to us the most apt, whilst being in circumstances and in functions which permit them more easily to fulfill their episcopal ministry, to confirm your children, and to be able to confer ordinations in our various seminaries,” as he explained in the sermon of the ceremony of consecrations.

Neither schismatic nor excommunicated
In the same sermon, Archbishop Lefebvre emphasized the extraordinary circumstances justifying his grave decision:

It is not for me to know when Tradition will regain its rights in Rome, but I think it is my duty to provide the means of doing that which I shall call “Operation Survival,” operation survival for Tradition. Today, this day, is “Operation Survival.

If I had made this deal with Rome, by continuing with the agreements we had signed, and by putting them into practice, it would have been “Operation Suicide.” There is no choice, we must survive. That is why today, by consecrating these bishops, I am convinced that I am keeping alive Tradition, that is to say, the Catholic Church.”

One year after the consecrations, in an interview published in the July-August 1989 issue of the SSPX’s magazine in France, Fideliter, the archbishop maintained that

We should have no hesitation or scruples with regard to these episcopal consecrations. We are neither schismatic nor excommunicated, and we are not against the pope. We are not against the Catholic Church. We are not creating a parallel Church. All that is absurd. We are what we have always been—Catholics carrying on. That is all.”

The role of our bishops
Their ministerial function being limited to the administration of the sacraments of holy orders and confirmation, our bishops neither received nor claimed any episcopal jurisdiction over priests or faithful.

In his 1989 interview by Fideliter, Archbishop Lefebvre stated that:

The four bishops are there to give ordinations and confirmations, to replace me and to do what I did for several years. For the rest, it is clearly the district superiors who are given a territory which is theirs and who, as far as they can, go to the help of the souls calling for them. For these souls have the right to have the sacraments and the Truth, the right to be saved. And, so we go to help them, and it is the request of these souls which grants us the right, as foreseen by Canon Law, to minister to them.”

In his letter to the four candidates, August 29, 1987, Archbishop Lefebvre had already explained that

The main purpose of my passing on the episcopacy is that the grace of priestly orders be continued, for the true Sacrifice of the Mass to be continued, and that the grace of the sacrament of confirmation be bestowed upon children and upon the faithful who will ask you for it.”

Archbishop Lefebvre insisted on their attachment to the Holy See and on their service to his priestly Society:

I beseech you to remain attached to the See of Peter, to the Roman Church, Mother and Mistress of all Churches, keeping in its entirety the Catholic Faith as expressed in the various creeds of the Faith, in the Catechism of the Council of Trent, in conformity with what you were taught in your seminary. Remain faithful in the handing down of this Faith so that the Kingdom of Our Lord may come.

Finally, I beseech you to remain attached to the Priestly Society of St. Pius X, to remain profoundly united amongst yourselves, in submission to the Society’s Superior General, in the Catholic Faith of all time, remembering the words of St. Paul to the Galatians (1:8-9): ‘But even if we or an angel from heaven were to teach you a different gospel from the one we have taught you, let him be anathema.’

The Roman reaction to the consecrations
On July 1, 1988, Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, signed a decree of excommunication announcing that Archbishop Lefebvre, Bishop de Castro Mayer, and the four new bishops had performed a schismatic act and excommunicated themselves latae sententiae (automatically) in accordance with the provisions of canon 1382 of the Code of Canon Law:

“A bishop who consecrates someone a bishop without a pontifical mandate and the person who receives the consecration from him incur a latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See.”

The following day, July 2, 1988, Pope John Paul II issued the apostolic letter motu proprio, Ecclesia Dei adflicta, confirming the excommunications and the existence of a schism.

The Society of St. Pius X has always contested the juridical validity of the censure. Besides other considerations, the excommunication was not incurred because a person who violates a law out of necessity is not subject to a penalty (canon 1323 §4), and even if there is no state of necessity, when one inculpably thought the opposite he would not incur the penalty (canon 1323 §7); and if one culpably thought there was such a state of necessity, he would still incur no automatic penalties (canon 1324 §3).

Accusation of schism
As for the accusation of schism, Archbishop Lefebvre always recognized the pope’s authority. Consecrating a bishop without pontifical mandate would be a schismatic act if one pretended to confer not just the fullness of the priesthood but also jurisdiction, a governing power over a particular flock. Only the pope, who has universal jurisdiction over the whole Church, can appoint a pastor to a flock and empower him to govern it. But Archbishop Lefebvre never presumed to confer anything but the full priestly powers of holy orders.

Cardinal Rosalio Castillo Lara, President of the Pontifical Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of Canon Law, in La Repubblica, October 7, 1988, stated that the consecrations performed by Archbishop Lefebvre and Bishop de Castro Mayer did not constitute an act of schism (“The mere fact of consecrating a bishop is not in itself a schismatic act”).

The Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law of the Catholic Institute of Paris, Fr. Patrick Valdrini, confirmed that “it is not the consecration of a bishop that creates a schism; what consummates the schism is to confer upon that bishop an apostolic mission” (Valeurs Actuelles, July 4, 1988).

And Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, has declared, on at least five separate occasions in public interviews (30 Giorni n. 9, 2005), that the Society of St. Pius X is not in a situation of formal schism. He has also affirmed that “the bishops, priests, and faithful of the Society of St. Pius X are not schismatics.” (Die Tagespost, February 8, 2007)

Finally, on January 21, 2009, a decree of the Congregation for Bishops, signed by its Prefect, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, based on the faculties expressly granted by Pope Benedict XVI, declared the decree of July 1, 1988, to be deprived of any juridical effect. (Source)

The above posting is simply to honor the very brave act of Archbishop Lefebvre 27 years ago today. It is not my intention to defend Archbishop Lefebvre’s actions, because they do not need defending. We who have the Latin Mass today, owe this brave and saintly man such a huge debt of gratitude, for his actions, by saving tradition, saved the Church, saved the faith.

Bishop Fellay’s Letter, November, 2014

There is so much discussion about our “Doomsday Pope” as some have called him and the depressing agenda he has set for the Church, that it is refreshing to hear from Bishop Fellay, who is leading the way for authentic Catholic renewal amidst this ongoing crisis. Here from SSPX.org is Bishop Fellay’s Letter to Friends and Benefactors, # 83.

Dear Friends and Benefactors,

Seventeen years ago now, the future Benedict XVI presented his vision of the future of the Church; at the time it seemed very pessimistic. He foresaw that the Mystical Body would be so fragmented that it would be reduced to a collection of small groups that were still lively, though surrounded by general decadence:

Perhaps the time has come to say farewell to the idea of traditionally Catholic cultures. Maybe we are facing a new and different kind of epoch in the Church’s history, where Christianity will again be characterized more by the mustard seed, where it will exist in small, seemingly insignificant groups that nonetheless live an intensive struggle against evil and bring the good into the world….” [1]

The Church… will be less identified with the great societies, more a minority Church; she will live in small, vital circles of really convinced believers who live their faith. But precisely in this way she will, biblically speaking, become the salt of the earth again.” [2]

Disastrous vision of the Church’s future
Is this vision the product of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s personal wisdom, or is it inspired by some other source, such as the Secret of Fatima? He alone can tell us. Whatever the case may be, gradually and especially since the Council we have been witnessing the slow disappearance of the Church as she appeared for at least 1,500 years, in other words, as a society that had profoundly permeated all of human life, the entire social organism, striving to shape a deeply harmonious whole with the temporal realm, even if the secular authorities often tried to encroach on the spiritual authority of the Church.

Since the French Revolution we have observed not only the separation of these two powers, but also an unceasing determination to combat and reduce the Church’s beneficent influence on human society. Since the post-conciliar period, with the bewildering reduction in the number of priestly vocations, with the loss of hundreds of thousands of men and women religious who had given their lives for God and neighbor, the Church’s presence in schools, in hospitals, and in social and political life has almost disappeared. No serious measure has been taken to check this catastrophic disappearance of the Church from society. By now she has practically been relegated to the sacristy. What is worse, in countries where the Church had lavished her good deeds, in the countries that once were called Christian, even the churches and sacristies are empty…. We are no longer very far from the almost prophetic vision of Cardinal Ratzinger.

But these external phenomena are accompanied by others belonging to the internal life of the Church; they are signs of weakness in the face of an enemy who is no longer outside, but now inside. The unity of the Faith and unity of the government of Holy Church are more and more thoroughly dissolving; and liturgical unity, with the “creative” options offered by the New Mass, particularly with the multiplication of Eucharistic Prayers, was long ago shattered. As for morality, the last Synod on the Family tragically demonstrated the proliferation of contradictory opinions that prevail in that area, which the authorities no longer seem capable of stemming, when they are not actively promoting it….

In the midst of this disaster, which has been noted by many observers, no doubt our modest Society seems like “[a] small, seemingly insignificant group that nonetheless lives an intensive struggle against evil and brings the good into the world….” If on the one hand the sight of the disfigured Church deeply grieves us, on the other hand we sing every day the Magnificat for the marvels that the Almighty still enables us to accomplish.

The Catholic family
In these few lines we would like to give you an insight into the current development of the Society, which, despite the hits that it has received on all sides, ceaselessly spreads the Good Lord’s grace and fortifies souls on their difficult, perilous pilgrimage to Heaven. For a long time we have realized that very special attention must be paid to the Christian family, the sacred hearth where children are born who are destined not only for life on this earth but for the life of Heaven. There is something terrifying and diabolical in the refined cruelty that is used to strike at this sanctuary, starting with the life of the unborn child in his mother’s womb.

Considering the number of large families who serenely cultivate virtue and seek the glory of God, without neglecting their duties toward their neighbors and society─quite the contrary!─we can only bless Our Lord and marvel at such mighty workings of grace! Yes, dear families, although Christian life has its demands, God’s help, and grace are unfailing, whatever the circumstances may be that often require of you a certain heroism. By the mere fact of your Christian life and your efforts, you give proof that this life is still possible today, and that those who abandon God’s commandments to seek other ways that cater to the modern world are defeatists who have lost the spirit of faith that ought to animate every Christian.

The Catholic school
This life of faith needs to be protected, and in order to develop, it needs the Catholic school. This has always been a major concern of the Church, so much so that she makes it a serious obligation for parents to watch over the Catholic education of their children, and even today threatens with a sanction those who fail in their duty! [3]

This is a serious, very specific concern: where nowadays are we to find authentically Catholic schools where the teaching of the Faith truly imbues all the subjects that are taught? Where do we find institutions that prepare future fathers and mothers for the battles that must be fought in this world in order to conquer Heaven?

This is why one of our major efforts concerns schools. Throughout the world we dedicate to them most of our resources, both human and material. And in fact a hundred or so schools of different sizes are forming thousand of staunch Christians for tomorrow.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
Although family and school provide indispensable protection for young people who are being educated, what can be done to support those who leave their parents’ home and go out into the world? We are greatly concerned about the perseverance of these young adults on the path of good and virtue, keeping their souls in a state of grace in the midst of such a perverted world. And so we can find no stronger antidote than the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, which we most assuredly consider as one of the greatest treasures and means of sanctification that has been placed in our hands─just after the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Holy Rosary. The Exercises were truly made for our times and are capable of providing the courage, strength and heroism necessary today for all souls of good will. This is why we insistently invite you not to neglect this means that has been placed at your disposal. Without a doubt, we consider the Spiritual Exercises as one of the spearheads of the Society, and the cause of that genuine miracle of grace which Christian life is today.

The priest and the Mass
But the supernatural life would not be possible without the priest, the privileged instrument who is willed and chosen by God to spread that life in the Mystical Body, particularly through the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The close bond that should unite the priest and the Mass is the testament that Archbishop Lefebvre left us. For the Mass is the source of all sanctification, and the priest, before all others, must drink deeply from that source so as then to make the souls entrusted to him benefit from it: “For them do I sanctify myself,” Our Lord said, “that they also may be sanctified in truth.” (Jn 17:19)

This mystery is at the heart of our seminaries. We jealously watch over it, and we carefully provide everything that can serve to beautify the liturgical ceremonies. The beauty of external signs reflects the sublimity of the mysteries by which our Redemption is wrought. Thus these ceremonies, which are grandiose and intimate at the same time, are like a prelude to Heaven.

The Mass is the joy and daily privilege of our approximately 200 seminarians, as well as the 40 or so pre-seminarians in our six seminaries on four continents. In the United States their growing number obliges us to build a new seminary, in Virginia. It should have a roof over it by next spring.

Moreover many churches are being built almost everywhere in the world, which shows the dynamism of the Faith. Yes, indeed, faith can move mountains! I firmly believe that only faith can explain this phenomenon, which surpasses human abilities. Thanks to God, your constant generosity and your ardent zeal make such achievements possible. Please accept our deepest thanks. Be assured of the grateful prayers of the seminarians, the priests, the brothers and sisters religious who each day ask God to reward your good works a hundredfold.

May Our Lady keep you in charity and peace, my dear friends, and may her Immaculate Heart lead you all to eternal happiness.

Now, the contrast of Bishop Fellay’s  letter and the modernist blather issuing forth from the current “Bishop of Rome” is pretty apparent, isn’t it! The difference is that Bishop Fellay’s focus is Christ-centered, while Bergoglio’s is man-centered. Thus, one is inspiring and one is banal.

Pray, pray always for increased devotion to Our Lady of Fatima and her message. Only she can turn the tide, cast out the evil from the Church and usher in the reign of Christ the King.

After their recent pilgrimage to Lourdes, Bishop Fellay gave this interview in which he describes the situation in the Church today as “a nameless catastrophe”. Bishop Fellay recalled the words of Archbishop Lefebvre, “It is because prelates, our prelates, the heads of the Church, no longer have any care or concern for the kingdom and reign of Our Lord Jesus Christ that things are going badly”, and he even went so far as to say that we cannot follow them.”

In Lourdes, under the Standard of Christ the King

La Porte Latine: Hello, Your Excellency. Thank you for answering La Porte Latine’s questions for the faithful of France who were not able to assist at this magnificent pilgrimage. How would you sum up this pilgrimage?

Bishop Fellay: Indeed, “magnificent” is the right word. A very, very, very beautiful pilgrimage, with a perfect convergence: the help from the central organization of the pilgrimage, who put everything we needed at our disposal, the Good God who made sure we had absolutely beautiful weather, beautiful late autumn days that made the ceremonies as serene as could be… I think that is the word I would use: serenity. It was very calm and beautiful. I think that souls were able to raise themselves up to God, unite themselves to God, thank the Blessed Virgin, and beg her for all the graces they need, that we need. Truly a beautiful pilgrimage of thanksgiving.

LPL: We have had several consecrations during this pilgrimage. Can you speak about them, since they also include all the faithful of the Society?

Bishop Fellay: In fact, they were renewals. I do not think that there were any direct consecrations, except maybe today’s which was really more of a petition to St. Pius X. But of course, he is our patron, and everything is already in his hands. The renewal of the consecration of the Society and of the District of France to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is the same as Fatima. Since Lourdes is a site of Our Lady’s apparitions, and the messages are really the same: they insist upon a very deep and very intimate devotion to the Blessed Virgin, to the Immaculate Heart. Here, it is the Immaculate Heart; in Fatima, it is the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart; but it is the same Blessed Virgin. So it is an important consecration for us, since it is clearly Heaven’s way of showing us the means to find protection and help in the difficult times we are living through; the Immaculate Heart is truly the means pointed out by God, by Heaven. There was also a consecration to the Sacred Heart, and to Christ the King. It is very dear to us, and very important.

This reminds me of something very enlightening that Archbishop Lefebvre said about the combat and the present problems in the Church; he made a connection with Christ the King, saying: “It is because prelates, our prelates, the heads of the Church, no longer have any care or concern for the kingdom and reign of Our Lord Jesus Christ that things are going badly”, and he even went so far as to say that we cannot follow them. And it is true that it is a language that is no longer understood today at all. I think that is one of the greatest misfortunes; it is a way of making the kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ a sort of theory that we no longer wish to put into practice—possibly for individuals, but for societies, recognizing that societies, countries, nations, belong to Our Lord—it is simply considered today as an idea from Mars, even in the Church. It is a profound tragedy because the same Lord of Nations is our Savior; He is at the head of all nations and of the Church, and He is at the same time the Savior, the only one who can save us. To take away a part—the part that includes human life, that is, the world; we have a soul and a body—is very serious, in fact, it is what the enemies of the Church wanted: to take away Our Lord’s scepter. This combat has been abandoned, and in the archbishop’s footsteps, we have always seen this as something very, very serious, and we are convinced we are right. So renewing this consecration, requested by Pius XI, is very important; it is a protest sent up to Heaven, saying: many have turned their backs on you, but not us! We wish to be with you.

LPL: And this last petition to St. Pius X today?

Bishop Fellay: St. Pius X is our patron. So we ask him truly to keep us, to protect us, to intercede from heaven for this work that has been placed under his patronage, and wishes to follow his example and benefit from his intercession. People can say whatever they want, but St. Pius X was truly a great holy pope. He was canonized in the name of his priesthood. Of course, the pope is, so to speak, the summit of the priesthood—Sovereign Pontiff—and that, too, is quite a program. We must remember that he, St. Pius X, is our model.

LPL: Catholics, and especially the faithful of the Society, are preoccupied by a few questions on recent events. The first is the Christians of the East who are being massacred these days. What is your opinion on what is happening?

Bishop Fellay: Firstly, an immense compassion. But also, there is no doubt that if we see today this extremely aggressive form of Islam in these countries, it is because there was a certain established order that has been completely overturned, and recently. Until now, the Christians lived in these countries with all the honor and respect due to them; we could say ever since the beginning. When Islam arrived, under Mohammed, they were not as barbaric as they are today. That, too, is a sign of the times. It should make people think, but we get the impression that no one thinks. They try to label it as a sort of extremism and they stop there. What is happening over there is serious—really very, very serious. Once again, when we no longer want the reign of Our Lord, well, we suffer the consequences: they are right under our eyes.

LPL: The media is talking a lot about the Catholic Church’s Synod. What should we think about it? What should we expect?

Bishop Fellay: There is nothing to expect. There is no need to wait. The direction has been given, and it is clear. We must simply say: it is clear. It is obvious that they wish to trivialize the situation of those who live in adultery, truly in a state of sin. They wish to trivialize it, and that is very, very, very serious. When we play with morality, we are playing with God’s commandments. To have dared, for two weeks, to leave up to opinion questions that leave no room for opinion! It is God’s word. All we have to say is “Amen.” We must, of course, think about how to help these people; we must always think about that. But we certainly do not help them by telling them there is an open door when there is none. The door that is being opened is a door to hell! These prelates who have received the power of the keys, that is, of opening the gates of Heaven, are closing them, and opening the gates of hell. It is unbelievable! It is crazy! Absolutely crazy! And as I said, the direction has been laid out. It is true that this synod was not supposed to make a decision; it was supposed to be a first step, but the first steps have been taken, the direction has been laid out, and it is not hard to guess what the following synod will do. Unless there is a much stronger reaction than the one we see today, and unfortunately, I doubt that there will be. Alas, there will not be!

LPL: What should we think of the beatification of Paul VI?

Bishop Fellay: It simply isn’t serious. The conclusion is that anyone can be a saint, especially if they are pro-Vatican II! Anything to do with Vatican II is now holy, beatified, canonized. Yet again, it is a way of trivializing holiness. It is no longer serious, it just isn’t serious! It hurts, it hurts us deeply. Religion is being ridiculed. A saint must shine by his virtues, his heroic virtues; he must be an example to be followed. And it is sad to say, but what they are doing here is not serious.

LPL: We will end with what the press got out of your sermon yesterday: “Fear not!” For the faithful who were not at this Mass, can you tell them what they should get out of it?

Bishop Fellay: What I said must be understood in the right way. I did not just say “fear not,” just like that. I said that humanly speaking, there are very serious reasons on all sides to be afraid, but that we must answer this human fear with a supernatural viewpoint, by listening to Our Lord who knew that the Apostles were afraid: this fear is nothing new.

This fear has been around ever since the Apostles. It is one of the most powerful weapons of the Church’s enemies’, especially the devil, for paralyzing the apostolic action of the Church. He tries to frighten, to terrify. We must conquer this fear, but not by seeking human means. Men are tempted either to let themselves be frightened by the reality before them, or to try to fix the problems themselves. To both, the true answer is the one given by Our Lord when He said “Fear not,” for we must seek help in Him. “Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini,” our help is in the Name of the Lord. We must look at God. And in a crisis as terrible as this one, it is all that we have left. As far as men are concerned, it is over, it is hopeless. The situation of the Church is a nameless catastrophe. So there really is reason to be frightened. But we do not have the right to let ourselves be paralyzed, we must go forward, we must reconquer, and that can only be done in the Name of the Lord. Looking at God and seeking the help promised by God.

When God asked the apostles to go out into the whole world, He must have said to them “Fear not,” but He also said, “Count on Me. I will always be with you.” That is the true message, it is not “Fear not.”

It is so pleasant to hear from Bishop Fellay; in contrast to Pope Francis, who condemns faithful Catholics in harsh words and continually calls them hypocrites, Bishop Fellay manages to assert true Catholic doctrine in a positive manner. Between the two of them, Bishop Fellay is definitely the gentleman. In my time of attending SSPX Chapels, I have never heard a priest attack a member of the Church hierarchy. In fact, last Sunday, Father Vernoy at St. Thomas More in Sanford gave a beautiful sermon for Christ the King, emphasizing that all authority, whether secular or spiritual, comes from Christ the King and there is no authority but through Him. He beautifully illustrated that the laws of Our King may not be infringed upon, even by the Church, which must always place obedience to God’s law first. It was a very good response to the recent Synod and was done without disrespect, as befits the Society.

As this poor Church, afflicted by the chastisement of Pope Francis and his modernist crew, continues to self destruct, the much maligned Society of St. Pius X continues to beckon those who seek the true faith of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. Viva Christo Rey!
