Notes Towards Consecration to Mary III

MYSTICAL UNION WITH MARY

A soul faithful to the devotion of which we have been speaking performs all its actions through Mary, in Mary and for Mary, and attains thereby to great intimacy with Our Lord. To consider only humility, the theological virtues, and the gifts of the Holy Ghost, the following are the more precious fruits of consecration to Mary when it is lived fully: a gradually increasing participation in Mary’s humility and faith, great confidence in God through her, the grace of pure love, and the transformation of the soul to the image of Jesus.

PARTICIPATION IN MARY’S HUMILITY AND FAITH

By the light of the Holy Ghost the soul consecrated to Mary will come to learn of all the evil that is in itself; it will see by experience that it is naturally incapable of every salutary and supernatural good and that through self-love it opposes many obstacles to the work of grace within it. Thus, it will attain to that contempt of self of which St. Augustine speaks in the City of God (Bk. XIV, ch. 28): “Two loves have built two cities. The love of self even to the degree of despising God has built the city of Babylon, and the love of God even to the degree of despising self has built the city of God.”

Notes Towards Consecration to Mary II

Today, we have the second in the series from Father Garrigou-Lagrange, thanks to a reader.

FRUITS OF THIS CONSECRATION

“This devotion,” St. Grignon de Montfort tells us, “gives us up altogether to the service of God, and makes us imitate the example of Our Blessed Lord, who willed to be ‘subject’ in regard to His Blessed Mother. (Luke 2:51). It obtains for us the special protection of Mary, who purifies our good works and adorns them when she offers them to her Divine Son. It leads us to union with Our Blessed Lord; it is an easy, short, perfect and safe way. It confers great interior freedom, procures great benefits for our neighbor, and is an excellent means of assuring our perseverance.”

The saint develops each of these points in a most practical way. He speaks of the easiness of the way: “It is an easy way, one followed and prepared for us by Our Blessed Lord in His own coming, one where there are no obstacles in reaching Him. It is true that one can arrive at union with God by following other roads; but there will be many more crosses and trials, and many more difficulties which it will not be easy to surmount—there will be combats and strange agonies, steep mountains, sharp thorns, fearful deserts. But the way of Mary is sweeter and more peaceful.

Notes Towards Consecration to Mary

A reader who wishes to maintain her anonymity offered a couple of articles taken from the great Thomist, Father Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P. as an aid towards our Renewal of our Consecrations next Sunday, for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. I am so grateful!

Consecration to Our Lady is a practical form of recognition of her universal mediation and a guarantee of her special protection. It helps us to have continual childlike recourse to her and to contemplate and imitate her virtues and her perfect union with Christ. In the practice of this complete dependence on Mary, there may be included—and St. Grignon de Montfort invites us to it—the resignation into Mary’s hands of everything in our good works that is communicable to other souls, so that she may make use of it in accordance with the will of her Divine Son and for His glory.

“I choose thee this day, O Mary, in the presence of the whole court of Heaven, as my Mother and Queen. I give and consecrate to you as your slave my body and my soul, my interior and exterior possessions, and even the value of my past, present and future good actions, allowing you the full right to dispose of me and of all that belongs to me, without any exception whatever, according to your good pleasure, for the greater glory of God, in time and in eternity.”

Consecration Prayer to Immaculate Mother of God

Here is the Consecration Prayer for those who may have forgotten to make theirs. I cannot stress enough the importance of making your Consecration! Readers have said, “I have not had ample time to prepare for my Consecration.” Do not let scruples be an obstacle. None of us ever feel  adequately prepared! But we must make a start, in any event. And our Blessed Mother will do the rest!

Act of Consecration to Jesus through Mary

O ETERNAL and incarnate Wisdom! O sweetest and most adorable Jesus! True God and true man, only Son of the Eternal Father, and of Mary, always virgin! I adore Thee profoundly in the bosom and splendors of Thy Father during eternity; and I adore Thee also in the virginal bosom of Mary, Thy most worthy Mother, in the time of Thine incarnation.

I give Thee thanks for that Thou hast annihilated Thyself, taking the form of a slave in order to rescue me from the cruel slavery of the devil. I praise and glorify Thee for that Thou hast been pleased to submit Thyself to Mary, Thy holy Mother, in all things, in order to make me Thy faithful slave through her. But, alas! Ungrateful and faithless as I have been, I have not kept the promises which I made so solemnly to Thee in my Baptism; I have not fulfilled my obligations; I do not deserve to be called Thy child, nor yet Thy slave; and as there is nothing in me which does not merit Thine anger and Thy repulse, I dare not come by myself before Thy most holy and august Majesty. It is on this account that I have recourse to the intercession of Thy most holy Mother, whom Thou hast given me for a mediatrix with Thee. It is through her that I hope to obtain of Thee contrition, the pardon of my sins, and the acquisition and preservation of wisdom.

Hail, then, O immaculate Mary, living tabernacle of the Divinity, where the Eternal Wisdom willed to be hidden and to be adored by angels and by men! Hail, O Queen of Heaven and earth, to whose empire everything is subject which is under God. Hail, O sure refuge of sinners, whose mercy fails no one. Hear the desires which I have of the Divine Wisdom; and for that end receive the vows and offerings which in my lowliness I present to thee.

I, ________________, a faithless sinner, renew and ratify today in thy hands the vows of my Baptism; I renounce forever Satan, his pomps and works; and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be more faithful to Him than I have ever been before. In the presence of all the heavenly court I choose thee this day for my Mother and Mistress. I deliver and consecrate to thee, as thy slave, my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions, past, present and future; leaving to thee the entire and full right of disposing of me, and all that belongs to me, without exception, according to thy good pleasure, for the greater glory of God in time and in eternity.

Receive, O benignant Virgin, this little offering of my slavery, in honor of, and in union with, that subjection which the Eternal Wisdom deigned to have to thy maternity; in homage to the power which both of you have over this poor sinner, and in thanksgiving for the privileges with which the Holy Trinity has favored thee. I declare that I wish henceforth, as thy true slave, to seek thy honor and to obey thee in all things.

O admirable Mother, present me to thy dear Son as His eternal slave, so that as He has redeemed me by thee, by thee He may also receive me! O Mother of mercy, grant me the grace to obtain the true Wisdom of God; and for that end receive me among those whom thou lovest, teachest, and protectest as thy children and thy slaves.

O faithful Virgin, make me in all things so perfect a disciple, imitator and slave of the Incarnate Wisdom, Jesus Christ thy Son, that I may attain, by thine intercession and by thine example, to the fullness of His age on earth and of His glory in Heaven. Amen. (St. Louis-Marie Grignon de Monfort, True Devotion to Mary, with Preparation for Total Consecration”, by Catholic Way, Kindle Edition).

† . † . †

To understand the importance of our Consecration, please consider: every ingrained sinful habit we have is actually a crack into our hearts which allows satan to slither in and break us down, little by little. Our Lady has no such flaw. She is the Immaculate Conception. As such, she is impervious to his deceits, and she is indeed powerful to protect her own.

If you knew you were going to have to be swimming in a sea of toxic ebola virus, HIV virus, and every other frightening biotoxin, you would grab any available protection. Yet the mortal sins being thrust at us from all directions today, especially those most seductive, the appeals to our pride, our self-love, envy, lust and greed – all these! They are fatal to our souls and threaten us with an eternity of damnation, and yet we blissfully ignore the generous gifts of of Our Lord to protect us!

And once you are consecrated, ask her frequently – at least several times a day, to help you live this consecration until you are able to live each day tucked closely into her Immaculate, loving, Mother’s heart!

Thank you for reading, I pray for you always.

† . Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of our hearts, Mother of the Church, do thou offer to the Eternal Father the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, for the conversion of poor sinners, especially our Pontiff.
† . Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Thy kingdom come! Viva Cristo Rey!
† . Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.
† . St. Joseph, protect us, protect our families, protect our priests.
† . St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

Please pray for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary!

The Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Mother of God

From December 8, 2016:

Today, December 8, we honor the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of our Savior and by His infinite goodness and mercy, our Mother, too.

The dogma of the Immaculate Conception is an affirmation of just how much God hates sin. Indifference to sin is perhaps the greatest danger to souls today. Thus, the remedy offered by our loving Father, devotion to the Immaculate Conception of Mary, Mother of our Savior Jesus Christ.

In 2015, for the Feast of her Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis insulted the Blessed Virgin as we reported in our post, “The Pope’s Gift to Mary on Her Feast Day”.

‘I will put enmities,’ said the Lord, ‘between thee and the Woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head.’

The previous year, in December, 2014, Pope Francis essentially rejected the dogma of the Immaculate Conception when he remarked in a homily (see here) that perhaps Our Lady may have doubted the promise made at the Annunciation that “He shall reign forever” as she witnessed Our Lord’s crucifixion. Francis said that Mary may have thought, “lies, I was deceived”. This means that the Vicar of Christ speculated that Mary may have sinned against the Holy Spirit, by doubting the truth of God. Now, for the pope to sin personally is one thing, but to preach sin in a homily is quite another. The pope’s remark brings to mind what Our Lord Jesus Christ told Sister Lucia about the need for reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

On May 29, 1930, during Sister Lucia’s weekly Eucharistic Holy Hour, Our Lord told her that the reason He demanded the First Saturdays of Reparation was because of the five types of offenses and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the first of these was “Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception”.  (The True Story of Fatima, from Father Gruner’s Fatima Center.)

When I first read that revelation, it seemed that it referred to protestants who deny Mary’s Immaculate Conception; it never crossed my mind that our Holy Father, the Pope would blaspheme against Our Blessed Mother’s Immaculate Conception. But it helped me to understand why, so long ago, the Angel of Fatima was crying out, “Penance, penance, penance!”. Even though the pope’s blasphemy passed by unobserved by most mainstream commentators, true Catholics need to come to Our Lady’s defense. Pope Francis’s errors must be pointed out and reparation to Our Lady is of the utmost importance. Also, it helps us to defend Our Blessed Mother if we are well-informed and knowledgeable about basic Church doctrines such as the Immaculate Conception.

St. Anselm, Doctor of the Church, tells us, “It was just that this holy Virgin be adorned with the greatest purity which can be conceived after God Himself, since God the Father was to give to her, as her Child, that only-begotten Son, whom He loved as Himself, as being begotten to Him from His own bosom, and this in such a manner that the selfsame Son of God was by nature the Son of both God the Father and this blessed Virgin. This same Son chose her to be substantially His Mother and the Holy Ghost willed that in her womb He would operate the conception and birth of Him from whom He Himself proceeded.”

In his treatise, The Glories of Mary, St. Alphonsus Liguori remarks, “How can we believe that God, when He was able to give His Son a noble Mother by preserving her from sin, would have consented that He should be born of a mother defiled with sin, thus permitting Lucifer to reproach Him with the opprobrium of being born of a mother who once was his slave and an enemy of God! ” Indeed, of two things we can be absolutely certain, firstly, that God is generous and merciful and secondly, that God hates sin, which destroys His grace in us. Mary could in no way have been “full of grace” as the Angel Gabriel said to her, if she had any sin at all.

The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was infallibly proclaimed on December 8, 1854 by Blessed Pius IX in his Apostolic Constitution, Ineffabilis Deus. He is the same Pope who issued the Syllabus of Errors, which is so despised by today’s hierarchy. Here is a brief quote or two from Blessed Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus.

“From the very beginning, and before time began, the eternal Father chose and prepared for His only-begotten Son a Mother in whom the Son of God would become incarnate and from whom, in the blessed fullness of time, He would be born into this world. Above all creatures did God so love her that truly in her was the Father well pleased with singular delight. Therefore, far above all the angels and all the saints, so wondrously did God endow her with the abundance of all heavenly gifts poured from the treasury of His divinity that this Mother, ever absolutely free of all stain of sin, all fair and perfect, would possess that fullness of holy innocence and sanctity than which, under God, one cannot even imagine anything greater, and which, outside of God, no mind can succeed in comprehending fully.”….

“…By the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, for the honor of the holy and undivided Trinity, for the glory and adornment of the Virgin Mother of God, for the exaltation of the Catholic Faith, and for the furtherance of the Catholic religion, by the authority of Jesus Christ our Lord, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own: We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.”

“Hence, if anyone shall dare — which God forbid! — to think otherwise than as has been defined by us, let him know and understand that he is condemned by his own judgment; that he has suffered shipwreck in the faith; that he has separated from the unity of the Church; and that, furthermore, by his own action he incurs the penalties established by law if he should dare to express in words or writing or by any other outward means the errors he think in his heart.”

“Let all the children of the Catholic Church, who are so very dear to us, hear these words of ours. With a still more ardent zeal for piety, religion and love, let them continue to venerate, invoke and pray to the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, conceived without original sin. Let them fly with utter confidence to this most sweet Mother of mercy and grace in all dangers, difficulties, needs, doubts and fears …. She presents our petitions in a most efficacious manner. What she asks, she obtains. Her pleas can never be unheard.”

We repeat the words of Blessed Pope Pius IX above:

There, in the undeniable, clear words of a truly holy Pope, we have the proof that Jorge Mario Bergoglio “is condemned by his own judgment; … he has suffered shipwreck in the faith” and “has separated from the unity of the Church”. But take heart! As the message of Fatima explains, and the Church from time immemorial proclaims, Our Lady of the Rosary, the Immaculata, will crush the head of satan and counter all heresies.

In Our Lady’s Little Office we pray:

“Rejoice, O Virgin Mary for thou alone hath destroyed all heresies in the whole world.
Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O Sacred Virgin, give me strength against thine enemies.”

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

If you would like to Renew your Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, today is an excellent day for it. Even if you have not been able to prepare properly, please consider making your consecration right now – Our Blessed Mother will graciously help you to live it.

On the Eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Remember, today we are blessed to make – or renew – our Consecration; but from now until the Nativity, we must advance in  living this dedication, this oblation really, by preparing a welcome for the Holy Family in our hearts and families. This is also the time of year to keep our priests in mind; please pray for them always.

There has never been a better time to pray Our Lady’s rosary and confound the devil!

Fire in the House of God

St. Louis Grignion de Montfort’s writings incorporate some prophetic passages such as his refererences to the Apostles of the Latter Times. They are useful aids in living the total consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in these difficult days. The following is an apt passage from St. Grignion de Montfort which resonates with us today.

The Power of Mary in the Latter Times

“But the power of Mary over all the devils will especially shine forth in the latter times, when Satan will lay his snares against her heel: that is to say, her humble slaves and her poor children, whom she will raise up to make war against him. They shall be little and poor in the world’s esteem . . . and persecuted as the heel is by other members of the body. But in return for this, they shall be rich in the grace of God, which Mary shall distribute to them abundantly.”

“they shall be ‘like sharp arrows in the hand of the powerful’ Mary to pierce her enemies.”That they may extinguish the fire in the House of God.”

Who shall these servants, slaves, and children of Mary be? The saint answers himself: “They shall be the ministers of the Lord who, like a burning fire, shall kindle the fire of divine love everywhere.” And “they shall be ‘like sharp arrows in the hand of the powerful’ Mary to pierce her enemies.”That they may extinguish the fire in the House of God.”

Remember, O Lord, Thy congregation: It is Thy Grace alone that must form this company. If man touches it first, nothing will be done. If he interferes with Thy work, he will spoil all, overturn all. Thy congregation: It is Thy work, great God. Do Thy work: do Thy all-divine work; collect, call, gather together Thy elect from all places over which Thou has domination and make of them a strong army to defend Thy heritage against Thy enemies.

Seest Thou, Lord, God of battles, seest Thou the … libertines, impious men are uniting against Thee every day – and so easily and promptly. … a breath of fame and earthly interest, a vile pleasure for which they long can, in a moment, unite them as one, … cover the earth and the sea with an innumerable multitude of the reprobate, who … are  united as one man, until death, to fight against Thee under the banner and the leadership of the demon.

And we, great God! Although there is so much glory and profit, so much sweetness and so many advantages to be gained by serving Thee, shall there be so few to take up Thy cause? Hardly any soldiers under Thy banner! Nary a St. Michael to proclaim among Thy brethren in zeal for Thy glory: Who is like unto God?
